OPERATION VENGEANCE

“Get Yamamoto”

American Intelligence planned a military operation to kill Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto the Commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Naval intelligence code-breaking had decrypted the travel plans for Adm. Yamamoto with his visit to forward Bases in the Solomon Island chain. He departed from Rabual a heavily fortified Island bastion in the SWP. On 18 April 1943 the “Air Ambush” was ready and waiting at Bougainville. With 16 P-38s orbiting up high awaiting for the Betty Bomber carrying Yamamoto to land. Hunter - Killer team designated of 4 P-38s tasked to shoot down the Bomber. All other P-38s were “up high” for top cover. The low altitude team was Led by Lt. Rex Barber, Lt. Frank “Besby” Holmes. Lt. Tom Lamphier, Lt. Ray Hine. Adm. Yamamoto was shot down in the “Betty” and was killed in the fiery crash along with all other crew members near Bougainville island. The G4M1 “Betty” [MB] Bomber aircraft was shot down by USAAF aircraft. VLR P-38s operating from Guadalcanal. Lt. Rex Barber made close firing passes with the kill shots that engulfed the plane into flames. Lt. Besby Holmes & Lt. Tom Lamphier provided extra insurance with a firing pass as the Bomber was to quickly crash into the verboten jungle. Lt. Rex Barber is given credits for the victory. MJ. Mitchell worked out all of the critical details for the “Air Ambush” plan along with Naval Intelligence. NIS had already broken the Imperial Japanese Naval codes. “Mitch” led the VLR Mission as Flight leader. Lt. Besby Holmes, who is an Ace, is depicted in the Print flying the P-38 # 100. With the successful “Air Ambush” Mission and with the loss of Imperial Japan’s most respected and capable military leader, their offensive capability was never the same with his loss. This Mission definitely changed the entire course of the World War II in the Pacific. Imperial Japan never recovered from the loss of Adm. Yamamoto.
